Critical Thinking 1 (Robert Markstrom, Instructor)

The class has 9 students. We have done a combination of game focused days and small group activities. The course has a history of having students create good and bad names for groups and then assigning them to other groups. This year the group leaders remembered the past and intentionally tried to find bad names for the other groups. As a result, each group kept the name they created. It left the following groups: Dumpster Divers, Living Blobs, and Hanta-virus. Five of the nine are returnees from last summer’s class.

Here are the activites the class has been exposed to during the summer:

Group Work
– jigsaw puzzle race
– Contagion – game where the players are a deadly virus trying to kill major cities.
– Mind Boggles – A communication activity demonstrating how speaker messages are not always easy to decipher by an audience.
– Puzzle worksheets – mazes, counting exercises, sudoku, and questions. – emphasis is placed on following directions and completing all parts of a page.

Games:
– Name Game
– What were you thinking
– Q-Bitz
– Ticket to Ride
– Stardew Valley (board game)
– Dark Souls
– Anomia
– Variety of puzzles
– Everdell
– Cosmogenesis
– Score Four

Critical Thinking 2 (Robert Markstrom, Instructor)

The class has three freshman in it. As a result, I am playing games that may take multiple days with them. Often a game is played multiple times to allow strategy changes. Critical Thinking 1 and 2 are not following the same schedule.

Games:
– Score Four
– Twixt
– Risk
– Robo-Rally
– Lords of Waterdeep
– Magic the Gathering (using only common cards)

One of the best parts of the program

for me was, for once, it allowed me to be one of the "normal" kids, instead of the "brainiac" nerd. I cherish that gift.
